Fully automatic evaluation of the results - Understand how the evaluation algorithm of Knee-CAT works

At the end of each exercise, Knee-CAT automatically evaluates the results and presents it in a clear layout to the users. Thereby the users get immediate feedback on how they performed and where the areas of improvement are.

Digital Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) performed with Knee-CAT - Watch Professor Heiko Graichen perfoming a clinical case

With the help of Knee-CAT, orthopaedic trainees can simulate the entire decision-making process of TKA procedures i.e., 11 intra-operative key decisions, 11 different alignment philosophies and 3 different alignment goals are included in the tool. The Knee-CAT algorithms automatically evaluate the results of the trainees against best-practice and give detailed suggestions on areas of improvement. All cases are based on real – but of course sanitized - patient data allowing a training that is as close to real as possible.

First steps with Knee-CAT - Learn everything you need to know to get started

In this video you will find everything you need to know to register, to participate in a course, to perform your homework assignments and to use the fully automatic evaluation function of Knee-CAT. Start your digital journey now!

The courses

We have three different courses: a basic course, an alignment course, and an expert course. We start with a 2 h web-session where a TKA expert explains all decisions a surgeon need to make. The trainees also get a personal access to the Knee-CAT tool and multiple tailored homework exercises. Feedback is given automatically by the Knee-CAT tool during the exercise. In addition, each trainee will have the opportunity to get a 1:1 Q&A session with the trainer.

A new digital training tool for orthopaedic surgeons – An introduction by the makers of Knee-CAT

Knee-CAT is a web-based training platform for orthopaedic surgeons who want to become familiar with the decision-making process of Total Knee Arthroplasty. The idea of Knee-CAT is to separate the conceptual teaching of alternative surgical workflows from performing a real surgery in the OR. Our goal is that the surgeon has performed multiple digital surgeries before doing a real surgery. This is not only good for the surgeon but also surely for the patient.

Alternative alignment workflows

  • Video

Mechanical Alignment - Tibia First

Every workflow has its own logic. In this episode you learn a very basic approach: Mechanical Alignment – Tibia First. Watch Heiko walking step-by-step through this classical workflow.

  • Video

Mechanical Alignment - Femur First

While tibia first surgeons define their femoral rotation based on gaps, Femur first surgeons apply a measured resection approach. Have a look at the key elements of this workflow.

  • Video

Adjusted Mechanical Alignment - Tibia First

Many of today’s surgeons use a slightly modified version of Mechanical Alignment, the so-called Adjusted Mechanical Alignment – Tibia First workflow. See what’s behind it.

  • Video

Patient Specific Alignment – Tibia First

Patient Specific Alignment has many advantages compared to classical MA. Watch Heiko and Wolfgang walking step-by-step through the decision-making process of the PSA workflow.

Kinematic Alignment - Femur First

Observe Tilman Calliess and Heiko Graichen performing a digital Kinematic Alignment workflow and listen to their discussion on the pros and cons of this modern workflow.

Stephanie erläutert die Unterschiede zwischen Mechanical und Adjusted Mechanical Alignment in der Theorie und an einem praktischen Knee-CAT Beispiel.

Meeting the Experts

EPISODE #1: Kinematic alignment with PD Dr. Tilmann Calliess

  • Video

Part 1: Introduction

Heiko Graichen will go onsite to interview and observe experienced colleagues at work. Heiko´s first interview partner is Tilman Callies form the articon clinic in Bern, Switzerland. In this video you will find a quick summary of what to expect in the following parts of this episode.

  • Video

Part 2: Planning of surgery

Tilman has the vision that modern knee surgery should be data driven, precise and based on well thought-through and proven workflows to ensure an optimum clinical outcome. Have a look how Tilman translates this goal into a pre-op planning process and follow the interesting peer-to-peer discussion with Heiko.

  • Video

Part 3: Robotic-assisted surgery

Tilman has performed more than 1.000 TKA procedures and he is a heavy user of robotics for knee surgery. Enjoy observing him performing a robotic-assisted TKA and applying a kinematic alignment workflow. In the discussion with Heiko he gives detailed insights on this technique.

  • Video

Part 4: Q&A and Knee-CAT showcase

Heiko has the chance to ask some final questions regarding Tilman’s kinematic alignment workflow and they perform a digital Knee-CAT show case together. With the help of the Knee-CAT tool, Tilman walks Heiko step-by-step through his decision-making process during surgery.

EPISODE #2: Patient Specific Alignment with Dr. Marco Strauch, Dr. Wolfgang Scior and Prof. Heiko Graichen

  • Video

Part 1: Introduction

In this episode Heiko will report from his own clinic. In part one, Heiko will discuss the pros and cons of Patient Specific Alignment with Dr. Marco Strauch and why they switched from Adjusted Mechanical Alignment to this specific workflow.

  • Video

Part 2: Digital PSA case with Knee-CAT

After discussing the key advantages of Patient Specific Alignment (PSA) compared to classical (Adjusted) Mechanical Alignment (AMA), Heiko and Wolfgang walk step-by-step through the decision-making process of the PSA workflow using Knee-CAT as a simulation tool.
